Case study · Insurance comparison
"We were paying $3,200 a year for home insurance. After using CompareIndulge, we found equivalent coverage at $1,870 — same deductibles, better flood protection."— R. Tan, homeowner in Bukit Timah, switched providers in February 2025
How people compare services and make better choices
Most comparison platforms show you a price grid and leave you to guess. CompareIndulge works differently. We walk through real decisions made by real Singapore residents — insurance policies weighed against each other, broadband plans tested over months, renovation contractors evaluated after project completion — so you can see not just the numbers, but the reasoning behind each choice.
This page is structured as a series of case narratives. Each one reveals a different comparison category, the framework we used, the outcome, and what the person would do differently next time. No rankings paid for by advertisers. No affiliate-driven "top picks." Just transparent comparison logic you can borrow for your own decisions.
The starting question
Every case study begins with a specific question a resident brought to us. "Is my current car insurance actually competitive?" or "Which broadband plan gives the best real-world speed in Tanjong Pagar?" We never start from a product list — we start from a lived situation.
How we gather options
We pull quotes, plans, or proposals from at least five providers in the relevant category. Where possible, we include both large incumbents and newer market entrants. All data is timestamped so you know exactly when the comparison was valid.
What we actually compare
Price is only one axis. We evaluate coverage gaps, contract lock-in terms, customer service responsiveness, hidden fees, renewal price behaviour, and exit penalties. Our comparison matrix adapts to the service category — what matters for a renovation contractor is different from what matters for a health plan.
After the switch
We follow up with participants three and six months after they act on a comparison. This post-decision data is rare in the comparison industry, and it is what makes our case studies genuinely useful rather than just snapshots of a moment in time.
Case two: Broadband in a new BTO flat
When L. Chua moved into a new Build-To-Order flat in Punggol, she needed broadband installed within two weeks. Three providers offered 1 Gbps plans at nearly identical monthly rates — $39.90, $40.50, and $42.00. The price difference across a two-year contract was less than $60 total.
So price was not the deciding factor. Instead, we helped her compare installation lead times (one provider could install within four days, another quoted three weeks), contract flexibility (one plan had no lock-in, the others required 24 months), router quality (mesh systems versus single-point routers), and actual measured speeds during peak evening hours based on crowdsourced data from the same estate.
She chose the provider with the four-day installation window and no contract lock-in, even though it was the most expensive by $2.10 per month. Six months later, her average evening speed tested at 840 Mbps — well above the 620 Mbps average reported by residents using the cheapest option in the same block.

The comparison report showed me things I would never have thought to check — like how much the renewal price jumps after year one. That single insight saved me from a plan that would have cost $200 more in the second year.— D. Menon, comparing health insurance supplements, April 2025
Our decision framework for comparing services
True total cost
We calculate the full cost across the entire contract period, including sign-up fees, equipment charges, price escalation clauses, and early termination penalties. A plan that looks cheap monthly can be expensive over 24 months once these are factored in.
Coverage and scope gaps
For insurance and warranty services, we map exactly what is excluded. We have found that the cheapest motor insurance policy in one comparison excluded windscreen damage, towing, and rental car coverage — benefits the client assumed were standard.
Switching friction
How easy is it to leave? We score providers on notice periods, cancellation fees, data portability, and whether they require physical visits to terminate. Low switching friction is a sign of provider confidence in their own service quality.
Post-purchase experience
We track claims processing times, support ticket resolution, billing accuracy, and app usability. These factors rarely appear on comparison sites but dominate real-world satisfaction after the initial purchase excitement fades.
Case three: Renovation contractor selection
Choosing a renovation contractor is one of the most stressful decisions for new homeowners in Singapore. K. Ng received quotes from seven interior design firms for a four-room resale flat renovation in Queenstown. The quotes ranged from $38,000 to $72,000 — a spread so wide it was almost meaningless without deeper analysis.
We helped break each quote into twelve line-item categories: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, hacking, tiling, painting, built-in wardrobes, kitchen cabinetry, feature walls, lighting, flooring, and project management fees. This revealed that the $38,000 quote excluded plumbing rerouting entirely and used laminate surfaces where the $52,000 quote specified solid surface materials.
Three months post-completion, no defects had been reported. The contractor who quoted $38,000, by contrast, had three ongoing dispute cases logged with the Consumers Association of Singapore during the same period.
How a typical comparison engagement unfolds
Initial conversation
You tell us what you are trying to compare and what matters most to you. We listen for the constraints that comparison engines miss — timeline pressure, risk tolerance, past bad experiences, household-specific needs.
Provider outreach and data collection
We gather quotes, plan details, or proposals from relevant providers. Where public pricing exists, we verify it directly. Where pricing is negotiable, we request formal written quotes under consistent parameters so the comparison is fair.
Structured comparison delivery
You receive a comparison document — not a ranking, but a structured breakdown across the dimensions that matter for your category. We highlight trade-offs explicitly so you can make a decision that reflects your priorities, not ours.
Follow-up and outcome tracking
After you act on the comparison, we check in at intervals to see how the chosen provider is performing. This data feeds back into our case study library and keeps our frameworks honest.
